Ghanaians love occultism and witchcraft movies.

A description of the Ghanaian movie industry by the President of the actors guild Samuel Odoi have stirred anger and controversy after he termed it as “Not Serious “The comment which he made on the Weekend Countdown, a weekly entertainment Review program on Pravda Radio have angered a number of industry players who argued that movie makers are businessmen who are willing to give their customers what they want. Speaking to Pravda Radio on the subject of creativity in our movie industry, the Vice president of the Film Producer Association of Ghana, Richard Quartey rejected claims that the industry lacked creativity, he explained that lack of funding is syphoning good scripts and creativity. He said the ordinary Ghanaian would rather buy comical local movies or those that portray occultism or witchcraft rather than a good story line, therefore what we have on the market now is a reflection of what the society wants. Mr Quartey explained that most film producers are concern with making profit, so they produce what sells and guarantees their return.Chairman of the Film Distributors Asoociation of Ghana  Asare Hackman says, characters seem to sell more that storylines in Ghana. He said its more expensive and time consuming to promote and sell good scripts as against one that have key characters that the public can easily identify with. He however added that although local comedy seems to be the popular trend on the market, it is gradually shifting into family centered movies. Veteran Ghanaian actor David Dontoh speaking on the role of performers in ensuring creativity in the industry, he told Pravda Radio that the level of professionalism in the film industry has dropped considerable over the years. According to him, although performers have a huge responsible to interpret the story, a lot also depends on the good directors, which is lacking in the Ghanaian film industry. He advised that in the quest to sell movies professionalism should not be over looked.
